If, like me, you had no idea that maple syrup and Fishers Indiana had anything in common, you might want to add a family Maple Syrup Hike through Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve to your list of things to do in Fishers Indiana! It’s a taste of spring, a taste of the great outdoors, and a taste of maple syrup all in one!

Participants in the Maple Syrup Hikes, sponsored by the Fishers Parks & Recreation Department, will have the opportunity to learn firsthand about the process of making maple sugar and – even better – to sample maple sap, maple sugar and maple syrup!

Fishers Maple Syrup Hikes are scheduled for the Saturday, Feb. 19 from 3-4:30 PM and Sunday, March 6, from 1-2:30 PM. Pre-registration is required and reservations for the Feb. 19 hike must be made by 4 PM, Feb. 15. Call 317-595-3150 or register online.

Is Noblesville closer? You’re in luck! The Hamilton County Department of Parks and Recreation is sponsoring a Maple Sugar Hike March 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Bray Family Homestead Park. To register, call 317. 774.2500 or email cool.naturecenter@hamiltoncounty.in.gov.

Fun Facts about Indiana Maple Syrup

  • In 1916, Indiana was the leading maple syrup producing state in the country.
  • Today, there are approximately 175 maple syrup producers in 57 counties across Indiana.
  • Maples aren’t the only syrup-producing trees. Syrup can be also be made from sycamore and birch trees, among others.
  • It takes about 45 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup.
  • The average Indiana maple syrup operation produces about 80 gallons of syrup each year.
  • The sugaring season runs from late January to the end of March and depends on freezing nights and warm, sunny days for sap flow.
